Watkins Glen, N.Y. (1 July 2017) - On a 4th of July holiday weekend that celebrates history, Action Express Racing will look to repeat a little bit of it on Sunday as the team aims to score another 1-2 result in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen (FS1 10:00 AM ET LIVE).
The race weekend has seen a typical range of upstate New York weather as a full day of dry track running on Friday turned into rainy and mixed conditions on Saturday. The 15-minute IMSA qualifying session ran with a dry track surface as the team worked to adapt to the continuous changes in weather.
Defending race winners Christian Fittipaldi, Joao Barbosa, and Felipe Albuquerque will share the driving duties in the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R in Sunday’s six hour race, which marks Round 6 of the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The combo took a podium finish when the trio last raced together earlier this season at Sebring, and will start the race from third on the grid after Fittipaldi posted a fast lap flyer of 1:35.306-seconds on the 3.4-mile natural terrain circuit.
“The Mustang Sampling Cadillac is pretty good and we are the first Cadillac,” Fittipaldi said. “I am expecting a race tomorrow—it is a long event. We need to keep our nose clean. I am confident with the changes we made from yesterday to the morning and then this afternoon. I am happy right now. Can we make it better? Yes—but if you ask the No. 10 they will say the same thing! I am happy with the package we have for tomorrow.”
The No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R of Dane Cameron and Eric Curran will start from the third row after Curran posted a quick time of 1:36.1030-seconds to secure sixth for Sunday’s grid.
“I didn’t do much dry running this weekend, I ran a lot wet laps this morning,” Curran said. “We just need to keep tweaking on this Whelen Engineering Cadillac to get it better. It is a six-hour race and anything can happen. We need to make the car a little bit better than we are now. We will try the next set-up with this great team. We may not be the fastest today, but we really know how to execute the pit stops and strategy for a race like the six-hours of The Glen. This is such a team sport and that is the case especially for a six hour because strategy, pit stops, and reacting to any setback is what can make the difference. Having this team behind me gives me a lot of confidence about tomorrow.”
IMSA is letting the fans pick their favorite custom patriotic liveries, with the two Action Express Racing machines up for top honors after arriving in upstate New York with two very compelling looks for the Cadillac entries.
